Why 2027 dates run late
2026 contained an Adhik Maas (intercalary month, Adhik Vaisakha), which inserts ~30 days into the lunar calendar. The result: every lunar festival in 2027 lands roughly 19 days later in the solar year than in 2026 — Diwali shifts from November 8 (2026) to November 27 (2027). There is no Adhik Maas in 2027.
How Hindu festival dates are actually fixed
Every date above comes from one rule: festivals are tithis, not solar dates. Diwali isn't "November 27" — it's "Kartika Amavasya," and November 27 is simply the solar date that tithi falls on in 2027. The computation chain:
- Tithi = the Moon's elongation from the Sun ÷ 12°. Each tithi lasts ~19–26 hours.
- Udaya tithi (tithi at sunrise) names the day — the classical "date" of the festival.
- Night festivals (Diwali, Holika Dahan, Karwa Chauth, Maha Shivaratri) use the tithi prevailing at the relevant night moment instead.
Two subtleties create most calendar disputes: kshaya tithis (a tithi shorter than a day that never touches sunrise — like Akshaya Tritiya's Tritiya in 2027) and vriddhi tithis (spanning two sunrises — like Dashami on Oct 9–10, 2027). Our dates above resolve both astronomically.
Regional variations to know
- Amanta vs purnimanta: the month names differ between North India (Purnimanta) and South/West (Amanta), but tithi-based festival dates are identical. Only the label changes.
- Kerala/Tamil Nadu: follow solar months for some festivals (Onam, Pongal, Vishu) — computed separately above.
- Bengal: Durga Puja dates match Shardiya Navratri (Sep 30–Oct 9, 2027); Kali Puja = Diwali night (Nov 27).
- Maharashtra/Gujarat: Vat Purnima (Jun 18) instead of Vat Savitri Amavasya; both are listed above.
Frequently asked questions
When is Diwali 2027 and why so late in November?
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is November 27, 2027 — late because 2026's Adhik Maas pushed the whole lunar calendar forward. It's the latest Diwali in recent years.
Which calendar do these dates follow — amanta or purnimanta?
Festival tithis are computed astronomically; the month labels above use the amanta convention. North Indian (purnimanta) observers may see different month names for the same absolute dates, but the festival dates themselves match.
Do festival dates change by city?
Tithi-based dates are nearly location-independent across India; only the exact muhurta hours shift with sunrise. NRIs should check tithi boundaries against local sunrise — occasionally shifting a festival by a day.
What is the difference between Chhath dates in Bihar vs the amanta calendar?
Chhath follows the "Kartika" Shukla paksha as reckoned in the purnimanta-using regions (Bihar, UP, Jharkhand) — in 2027 that's December 2–4, right after Diwali. The naming follows tradition, not the amanta month label.
When does Pitru Paksha 2027 start and end?
September 15 (Purnima shradh) to September 29 (Mahalaya/Sarvapitri Amavasya) — 15 days for ancestral rites.
