Vahan Muhurat 2027: Auspicious Dates for Vehicle Purchase (Nakshatra Rules)

A car is often the second-biggest purchase of a family's life — and in the Vedic tradition, the moment it becomes yours matters. Vahan muhurat is the electional-astrology window for buying a vehicle, taking delivery, or starting the first drive. The rules are simpler than wedding muhurta but just as specific.

The 3 rules of vahan muhurat

1. Nakshatra — the non-negotiable filter. The Moon must be in a swift, stable star: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, or Revati. These are the vahan nakshatras of the Muhurta Chintamani — stars associated with movement, craftsmanship, and safe travel. Avoid Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, and the other sharp/violent stars.

2. Tithi. Skip the rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi — 4th, 9th, 14th of each fortnight) and Amavasya. Everything else is workable; Dwitiya, Panchami, Saptami, and Ekadashi are favorites.

3. Vara (weekday). Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Tuesday is debated — Mars rules machinery and metals, so some traditions prefer Tuesday for vehicles while others avoid it. Saturday is generally avoided. When in doubt, pick Wednesday or Thursday.

Also avoid: Bhadra (Vishti karana) windows, Rahu Kaal for the actual handover, and eclipse days.

The first drive: doing it right

  1. Puja first. A small Vahan puja — coconut, flowers, turmeric-kumkum on the bonnet, camphor aarti — is standard before the first drive. Many dealers now expect it.
  2. Lemon ritual. The crushed-lemon-under-the-wheel custom is about absorbing negative energy at the start of the journey — do it in the muhurta, not earlier.
  3. Direction. Traditionally the first drive heads east or north.
  4. Who drives. The owner (or eldest family member) takes the wheel first.

Frequently asked questions

Is online car booking eligible for muhurta?

The muhurta attaches to the moment of commitment — payment or registration — and the first drive. If you book online, time the payment and take delivery/first drive in the muhurta.

What if my delivery date can't move?

Then do a Vahan puja and take the first ceremonial drive in the next available muhurta window. Dealers are used to this — ask for the car to stay parked until your window.

Does the muhurta differ for two-wheelers?

No — the same nakshatra/tithi/vara rules apply to bikes, scooters, and commercial vehicles.

Can I buy a car during Pitru Paksha?

Pitru Paksha (15 Sep–29 Oct 2027) is for ancestral rites, not new purchases. Most families avoid big buys then. Wait for the post-Diwali window instead.

What about the number plate — does numerology matter?

Many buyers pick the registration number by numerology (see our numerology tools). It's a separate tradition from muhurta — the two don't conflict.
