'Which Dasha Am I Running?' — How to Find Your Current Mahadasha & Antardasha

Finding your current dasha takes three steps: (1) identify your birth nakshatra — the Moon's nakshatra at the moment you were born; (2) its ruling planet gives your birth mahadasha, and the nakshatra's unexpired portion gives the balance remaining at birth; (3) walk the Vimshottari sequence forward, adding each planet's years, until you reach today. The whole chain hangs on one thing: an accurate birth time.

Step 1: Find Your Birth Nakshatra

Everything in Vimshottari flows from a single fact: where the Moon stood when you were born. The Moon's position falls in one of 27 nakshatras (lunar mansions), each ruled by a planet:

Nakshatra lordNakshatrasMahadasha years
KetuAshwini, Magha, Moola7
VenusBharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha20
SunKrittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha6
MoonRohini, Hasta, Shravana10
MarsMrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta7
RahuArdra, Swati, Shatabhisha18
JupiterPunarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada16
SaturnPushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada19
MercuryAshlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati17

Example: born with the Moon in Rohini → birth mahadasha is the Moon's, 10 years total.

You need your Moon's exact longitude to place the nakshatra — which means you need your birth date, time and place. Generate your free Vedic chart and it's computed automatically, with Swiss-Ephemeris-grade precision.

Step 2: Calculate the Balance at Birth

You're almost never born at the exact start of a mahadasha. The balance at birth is the unexpired remainder:

Balance = (unexpired portion of birth nakshatra) × (mahadasha lord's total years)

If 60% of Rohini remained unexpired at your birth, your Moon mahadasha balance is 60% of 10 years = 6 years. Your Moon mahadasha runs for your first 6 years of life — not 10.

This single number shifts your entire life timeline, which is why birth-time accuracy matters so much (see below).

Step 3: Walk the Sequence Forward to Today

From your birth mahadasha, follow the fixed Vimshottari order, adding each planet's full years:

Ketu (7) → Venus (20) → Sun (6) → Moon (10) → Mars (7) → Rahu (18) → Jupiter (16) → Saturn (19) → Mercury (17) → back to Ketu…

Continuing the example: born with 6 years of Moon mahadasha remaining → then Mars (7 years) → Rahu (18) → Jupiter (16) → Saturn (19) → Mercury (17) → Ketu (7) → Venus (20)… Find which segment contains today's date, and that's your mahadasha. Then apply the antardasha formula — (mahadasha years × sub-lord years) ÷ 120 — to find the running sub-period within it.

Worked Mini-Example

Born 1990 with Moon in Rohini, 60% unexpired:

  • 1990–1996: Moon mahadasha (balance 6 yrs)
  • 1996–2003: Mars (7 yrs)
  • 2003–2021: Rahu (18 yrs)
  • 2021–2037: Jupiter (16 yrs) ← running now (in 2026)
  • Within Jupiter mahadasha in 2026: Jupiter-Saturn or Jupiter-Mercury antardasha depending on exact dates — the calculator gives the precise changeover day.

Why Different Websites Disagree About Your Dasha

If two calculators show different dashas, it's almost always one of three things:

  1. Ayanamsa. Lahiri vs Raman vs Krishnamurti shifts nakshatra boundaries by up to ~a degree. Near a boundary, the birth nakshatra itself flips — and with it the entire sequence. (Our engine uses Lahiri, the official Indian standard.)
  2. Birth time entered differently. A few minutes' difference near a nakshatra pada boundary changes everything downstream.
  3. Different dasha system. Some calculators default to Yogini or Ashtottari dasha. Make sure you're comparing Vimshottari to Vimshottari.

How Accurate Must Your Birth Time Be?

  • Mahadasha level: ±10–15 minutes is usually fine — except near nakshatra boundaries, especially gandanta zones (the junctions between water and fire signs: Cancer–Leo, Scorpio–Sagittarius, Pisces–Aries), where 2–3 minutes can flip the birth nakshatra and your whole timeline.
  • Antardasha/pratyantardasha level: aim for accuracy within a few minutes; sub-period boundaries are sensitive.
  • Unknown birth time: dasha timing can't be reliably computed — rectification (working backward from life events) is the classical workaround, and it's a job for an experienced astrologer, not a calculator.

What to Do With the Answer (Reading Your Dasha Output)

Getting your timeline is step one; reading it is the skill. When you have your mahadasha–antardasha dates:

  1. Name the chapter. Look up your mahadasha lord's portfolio — that's your multi-year theme. (Our mahadasha guides cover all nine.)
  2. Read the current scene. Your antardasha tells you what's actually active now — apply the antardasha judging rules.
  3. Check the horizon. Note the next changeover date — if it's within a year, read our dasha sandhi guide; transitions need different handling than middles.
  4. Cross-check transits. Is Sade Sati or Dhaiya running? Check the transit page — transits modulate everything.
  5. Plan, don't prognosticate. Use favourable windows for launches and difficult ones for consolidation, health and skill-building. That's the entire practical art.

Cross-Check With Yogini and Chara Dashas

Vimshottari is primary, but two cross-checks sharpen the picture enormously:

  • Yogini Dasha (36-year cycle) — when Vimshottari shows a smooth period but life feels abrupt, Yogini usually shows why. Sankata or Ulka Yogini running inside a "good" mahadasha explains the grit. (Full guide)
  • Chara Dasha (Jaimini, sign-based) — for career questions specifically, the running sign-period and its karakas often describe professional texture better than the planetary dasha. (Full guide)

When all three systems agree on a theme, traditional astrologers treat it as strongly confirmed. When they disagree, each is usually describing a different department of life — not contradicting, but completing.
