Enter both birth charts' details and run the full ten-porutham check — Dinam to Vedhai — with Rajju and Vedhai flagged the way tradition itself flags them: as vetoes, not as points in an average.

The South Indian system

What is porutham?

When a marriage is proposed in Tamil Nadu or Kerala, the first astrological question is rarely "what is the score?" It is "porutham undo?" — is there porutham? Porutham means agreement, and the system named for it checks ten specific agreements between the bride's and groom's birth stars (janma nakshatras) and Moon signs. Each of the ten is judged on its own terms and answered plainly: it matches, or it does not.

The ten are not ten slices of one score. They read different strands of a shared life — health, temperament, children, longevity, intimacy, fortune, friendship of mind, attraction — and two of them step outside the counting entirely. Rajju Porutham, which compares the body-zone (rajju) of each star, is considered so critical that a mismatch traditionally ends the discussion. Vedhai names star pairs that afflict each other, and a vedhai pair is set aside even when the other nine agree. A porutham result is therefore read in a specific order: vetoes first, count second.

Regional practice varies — Kerala and Tamil traditions weight a few checks slightly differently, and some authorities relax individual poruthams in defined cases. The engine behind this page follows the classical ten as they are commonly applied, and shows you every check and its reasoning, so your family's own astrologer can see exactly what was judged and how.

Dinam to Vedhai

The ten poruthams, briefly

1 · Health & longevity

Dinam

Counts the stars from the bride's birth star to the groom's. Favourable counts are said to promise health, ease and long life together.

2 · Temperament

Ganam

Every star belongs to a gana — Deva (gentle), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (intense). Like-minded gana pairings are preferred; clashing temperaments score against the match.

3 · Progeny & prosperity

Mahendram

A counted-star check read for children, wellbeing and the uplift of the family the couple will raise.

4 · Durability of the marriage

Sthree Deergham

Reads the distance between the two birth stars; traditionally taken as an indicator of the husband's longevity and how long the married life endures.

5 · Intimacy & instinct

Yoni

Each star carries a yoni — an animal symbol. Friendly yoni pairs point to physical and instinctive harmony; enemy pairs point the other way.

6 · Fortune & family welfare

Rasi

The relationship between the two Moon signs themselves, read for prosperity, domestic peace and the welfare of the household.

7 · Friendship of the sign lords

Rasyadhipathi

If the planetary lords of the two Moon signs are friends, the couple's minds, aims and decisions are said to move together instead of against each other.

8 · Mutual attraction

Vasyam

Certain sign pairs hold a natural pull — vasyam — over each other. This checks that the attraction and influence between the two signs is harmonious.

9 · The critical check

Rajju

The stars are grouped into five rajju — zones of the body from foot to head. If both partners' stars fall in the same rajju, tradition treats it as a dosha grave enough to stop the match on its own.

10 · The afflicting pairs

Vedhai

Certain pairs of stars are named as vedhai — they obstruct each other. A vedhai pair is not recommended even when every other porutham agrees; it overrides the count.

Two systems, one couple

Porutham vs Guna Milan

North India matches by Guna Milan — the Ashtakoota system of 8 kootas scored to a total of 36 points. It produces a graded number, and couples (and families) tend to argue about the number: is 17 enough, is 24 good? South India matches by porutham — 10 pass/fail checks, two of them vetoes, and no headline number to hide behind. The same two charts can score a comfortable 26 of 36 in Guna Milan and still fail Rajju — or clear all ten poruthams while the graded score sits in the middle.

Neither system is a refinement of the other; they are two traditions reading the same stars for different things. The practical rule families actually follow is simple: match by the system of your own tradition. If porutham is yours, this page is the full check. If Guna Milan is yours, our kundli matching calculator runs the 36-point Ashtakoota with dosha checks. And if the two systems disagree about you, that disagreement is itself information — it usually means the match is ordinary in most respects and turns on one specific traditional concern, which a full compatibility reading can weigh in context.
