Shani's long transit

What is Sade Sati?

Saturn is the slowest of the visible planets, spending about two and a half years in each sign. Your Moon sign — the rashi the Moon occupied at your birth — is the emotional centre of a Vedic chart. When transiting Saturn reaches the sign before your Moon sign, Sade Sati begins; it deepens as Saturn crosses the Moon sign itself, and it releases as Saturn traverses the sign after. Three signs at roughly two and a half years each: saade saati, seven and a half years.

In the classical picture, Saturn is the planet of karma, labour, delay and consequence — a strict teacher rather than a villain. Its passage over the Moon is traditionally said to press on the mind: routines are tested, shortcuts stop working, and life asks for patience, structure and honest effort. That is also why the same period is credited, in the same texts, with durable achievements — promotions earned slowly, businesses built brick by brick, character formed. Sade Sati does not decide which of those your seven years become; the rest of the chart, and your running dasha, carry that weight.

Because Saturn returns to the same relative position every 29–30 years, Sade Sati typically comes two or three times in a lifetime — often once in youth, once in the working years, and once in later life — and each round is read against the age and station of the person living it.

Rising · Peak · Setting

The three phases, honestly

Phase 1 · ~2.5 years

Rising

Saturn in the 12th sign from your Moon. Tradition links this stretch to expenditure, travel and time away from home — money and energy flowing outward. It often begins quietly: a background pressure, disturbed sleep, a sense that the old arrangement is expiring.

Phase 2 · ~2.5 years

Peak

Saturn over your Moon sign itself — the phase people mean when they speak of Sade Sati's weight. Mind, health and closest relationships ask for the most care. It is also the phase of reckoning: what was built on sand shows it, what was built honestly holds.

Phase 3 · ~2.5 years

Setting

Saturn in the 2nd sign from your Moon — family, speech, savings and nourishment come into focus. For most people the pressure gradually lifts across this phase, leaving behind whatever the seven years restructured.

Alongside Sade Sati runs a shorter, sharper passage: Dhaiya, when Saturn transits the 4th or 8th sign from your Moon — about two and a half years each, traditionally tied to home and property (4th) or to sudden change and shared resources (8th). This calculator reports Dhaiya too, distinctly, rather than folding it into Sade Sati.

A necessary word against fear: an entire Moon-sign cohort — everyone born with the Moon in the same sign — passes through Sade Sati together, and their seven years are manifestly not identical. The transit sets the weather; your chart, dasha and choices decide the journey. Any astrologer or website that uses Sade Sati mainly to frighten you into buying remedies is selling, not reading.
