Eclipses in 2027: Solar & Lunar Dates, Sutak Rules, What to Do

2027 has five eclipses — two solar, three lunar. From India, two matter: a penumbral lunar eclipse on the night of 20–21 February (2:42–6:43 AM IST) and a partial solar eclipse on 2 August (afternoon). The rest are invisible from the subcontinent — and that visibility question decides whether sutak applies to you at all.

Sutak: the rules

Sutak (sootak) is the precautionary period before a visible eclipse:

  • Solar eclipse: 12 hours before first contact
  • Lunar eclipse: 9 hours before first contact

During sutak and the eclipse: no cooking or eating (elders/children/ill exempt), no new beginnings or muhurta activities, temples close, weddings and samskaras are not scheduled. After the eclipse: bathe, change clothes, clean the kitchen, resume.

The penumbral question. All three 2027 lunar eclipses are penumbral — the Moon only grazes Earth's faint outer shadow. Many authoritative panchangas do not declare sutak for penumbral eclipses, and temples often stay open. Stricter households observe it anyway. Our honest guidance: for Feb 20–21, follow your family's tradition; there's genuine scholarly disagreement, not a single rule.

Sutak for the Aug 2 solar eclipse: 12 hours before local first contact (afternoon eclipse → sutak from the previous night/morning). Get your city's exact eclipse timing from a published panchanga — sutak is computed from it.

What to do during the eclipse

  • Japa and meditation — traditionally, mantra repetition during an eclipse is said to multiply in effect.
  • Charity — giving food, clothes, or money after the eclipse is customary.
  • Bathe afterward — the standard purification when the eclipse ends.
  • Pregnant women — tradition says rest indoors, avoid sharp instruments; modern note: no scientific mechanism is established — treat it as cultural precaution and do what brings peace.

What to avoid

  • Never look at a solar eclipse (even partial, even through clouds) without ISO 12312-2 certified glasses. Lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch.
  • No eating/cooking during sutak (with the usual exemptions).
  • No weddings, griha pravesh, or business openings on eclipse days — check our 2027 muhurta dates instead.
  • Don't panic about penumbral eclipses: they're barely visible shading, and half the traditions don't mark them at all.

Sutak timetable: the two India-visible eclipses of 2027

20–21 February (penumbral lunar): eclipse 2:42–6:43 AM IST on Feb 21. If your tradition observes sutak for penumbral eclipses, it runs roughly 9 hours before — from ~5:45 PM on Feb 20. Many panchangas will list no sutak for this one.

2 August (partial solar): eclipse in the afternoon IST (exact local times vary by city — check a published panchanga). Sutak begins ~12 hours before first contact, i.e., late night of Aug 1 / early morning Aug 2 for most of India. Temples close through the sutak and eclipse; plan Monday-morning temple visits accordingly.

Eclipses and your kundli

Classical texts don't treat every eclipse as personally significant. The traditional triggers for attention:

  1. Eclipse on your natal Moon's nakshatra — the one case most texts flag for shanti (remedies).
  2. Eclipse in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 10th from your natal Moon — watched more carefully.
  3. Everyone else — the eclipse is a collective/regional event; ordinary precautions (sutak customs) suffice.

This is why generic "eclipse doom" posts are misleading: the tradition itself is selective about whom an eclipse concerns. If the Aug 2 solar eclipse falls on your Moon's nakshatra, a simple Surya shanti and extra japa are the standard response — not fear.

Frequently asked questions

Will the 2 August 2027 eclipse be total in India?

No — totality passes over Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. India sees a partial eclipse (afternoon). It is still a grahan for sutak purposes where visible.

Do eclipses affect my horoscope?

Classical texts give eclipses importance mainly when they fall on your natal Moon's nakshatra or in key houses — a personalized reading, not a blanket effect. Don't read generic doom into every eclipse.

Can I travel during an eclipse?

Travel begun before sutak is fine; tradition avoids starting journeys during the eclipse itself. Practical travel continues normally.

Why do temples close during sutak?

The deity is considered to be resting/protected from the disturbed period; doors reopen after purification rituals post-eclipse. It's ritual logic, observed widely.
