Hora System: Planetary Hours & How to Use Them Every Day
Hora is the Vedic planetary-hour system: every hour of the day is ruled by a planet, and each planet colors its hour. Want to sign a deal? Mercury's hour. Start a diet or discipline? Saturn's hour. Begin worship? Jupiter's or the Sun's. (And yes — the English word hour comes from hora.)
How the sequence works
Divide sunrise→sunset into 12 equal "day horas" and sunset→sunrise into 12 "night horas" (they're unequal "seasonal hours," longer by day in summer). The first hora at sunrise is ruled by the weekday lord — Sun on Sunday, Moon on Monday, Mars on Tuesday, Mercury on Wednesday, Jupiter on Thursday, Venus on Friday, Saturn on Saturday.
After that, horas cycle in Chaldean order (slowest to fastest visible planet): Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon → Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → (repeat).
Example: Wednesday (sunrise 6:00 AM, sunset 6:00 PM)
| Hora | Time | Lord |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6:00 – 7:00 AM | Mercury (weekday lord) |
| 2 | 7:00 – 8:00 AM | Moon |
| 3 | 8:00 – 9:00 AM | Saturn |
| 4 | 9:00 – 10:00 AM | Jupiter |
| 5 | 10:00 – 11:00 AM | Mars |
| 6 | 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Sun |
| 7 | 12:00 – 1:00 PM | Venus |
| 8 | 1:00 – 2:00 PM | Mercury |
| 9 | 2:00 – 3:00 PM | Moon |
| 10 | 3:00 – 4:00 PM | Saturn |
| 11 | 4:00 – 5:00 PM | Jupiter |
| 12 | 5:00 – 6:00 PM | Mars |
Night horas continue the cycle from sunset's lord.
Night example: same Wednesday (sunset 6:00 PM → sunrise 6:00 AM)
The 12th day hora was Mars (5:00–6:00 PM). Continuing Chaldean order from Mars:
| Hora | Time | Lord |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6:00 – 7:00 PM | Sun |
| 2 | 7:00 – 8:00 PM | Venus |
| 3 | 8:00 – 9:00 PM | Mercury |
| 4 | 9:00 – 10:00 PM | Moon |
| 5 | 10:00 – 11:00 PM | Saturn |
| 6 | 11:00 PM – 12:00 AM | Jupiter |
| 7 | 12:00 – 1:00 AM | Mars |
| 8 | 1:00 – 2:00 AM | Sun |
| 9 | 2:00 – 3:00 AM | Venus |
| 10 | 3:00 – 4:00 AM | Mercury |
| 11 | 4:00 – 5:00 AM | Moon |
| 12 | 5:00 – 6:00 AM | Saturn |

Hora + Choghadiya + Rahu Kaal: the daily stack
Serious daily timing layers three systems: avoid Rahu Kaal, prefer a good Choghadiya, and pick the hour whose planet suits the task. When all three agree — e.g., Thursday, Shubh choghadiya, Jupiter hora — you have the strongest ordinary-day window possible without a full muhurta.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hora the same as the ascendant?
No. Hora = planetary hour (1/24 of the day-night cycle). Lagna/ascendant = the zodiac sign rising at a moment. Both are used in muhurta selection, for different purposes.
Do I need exact sunrise for Hora?
Approximate is fine for planning; exact matters at the boundaries. Use your city's actual sunrise/sunset, not clock-hour assumptions.
Which Hora is best for a job interview?
Mercury hora (communication) or Jupiter hora (wisdom, favor of elders). See our practical guide to muhurta for job interviews and exams.
