Choghadiya Explained: Shubh & Ashubh Chaughadiya Timings (Day & Night)

Choghadiya (Chaughadiya, "four-ghatika") is India's everyday muhurta system — simpler than full panchangam election, and the first thing millions check before starting anything. The day and the night are each split into 8 segments, every segment ruled by a period-lord. Four lords are good, three are bad. Pick a good one; avoid the bad ones. That's the whole system.

The 7 choghadiya lords

LordNatureGood for
Amrit (Moon)BestAll auspicious beginnings
Shubh (Jupiter)GoodWeddings, puja, education, spiritual work
Labh (Mercury)GoodBusiness, profit, study, deals
Char (Venus)Good (movable)Travel, journeys, movable matters
Rog (Mars)BadAvoid — disease/strife
Kaal (Saturn)BadAvoid — destruction/delay
Udveg (Sun)BadAvoid — anxiety, government matters only

Day choghadiya order by weekday

The sequence starts at sunrise and depends on the weekday (each day begins with its own lord):

(Every day begins and ends with the same lord; the 8 segments cycle through the 7 lords.)

Night choghadiya order by weekday

Night segments run sunset to sunrise, starting with a different lord each night:

How to use choghadiya in 30 seconds

  1. Note sunrise/sunset for your city; divide day and night each into 8 equal parts.
  2. Find today's weekday row in the day table; count to the current segment.
  3. Amrit, Shubh, Labh: go. Char: go (travel especially). Rog, Kaal, Udveg: wait.
  4. For extra strength, combine with the Hora lord of the hour and avoid Rahu Kaal.

Our muhurta finder computes today's choghadiya for your city automatically.

Worked example: finding today's choghadiya

Say it's Wednesday, sunrise 6:30 AM, sunset 6:10 PM (11h 40m of daytime). Divide by 8 → each segment ≈ 1h 28m. Wednesday's day row starts with Labh:

SegmentTimeLordVerdict
16:30 – 7:58 AMLabhGood — start work
27:58 – 9:26 AMAmritBest — important calls
39:26 – 10:54 AMKaalAvoid beginnings
410:54 AM – 12:22 PMShubhGood
512:22 – 1:50 PMRogAvoid
61:50 – 3:18 PMUdvegAvoid
73:18 – 4:46 PMCharGood for travel
84:46 – 6:14 PMLabhGood

So on this Wednesday you'd schedule the important meeting at 8:00 AM (Amrit) and the site visit at 4:00 PM (Char), and avoid signing anything between 9:30–10:30 AM (Kaal).

Frequently asked questions

Which choghadiya is good for business deals?

Labh (Mercury — gain) is the business segment; Amrit works for everything. Avoid Kaal and Udveg for signings.

Can weddings happen in any choghadiya?

Shubh and Amrit are the wedding segments in this system. But a wedding needs the full panchangam screen (tithi, nakshatra, lagna) — choghadiya alone is not enough. See our 2027 wedding dates.

Why does my app show different choghadiya times than my pandit?

Different sunrise/sunset inputs and different segment conventions (some divide sunrise-to-sunrise). The lords' order is standard; the clock times shift with the inputs.

Is Char choghadiya good or bad?

Good — but specifically for movable matters (travel, relocation, vehicles). For fixed matters (housewarming, foundation), prefer Amrit or Shubh.
