Bhadra & Inauspicious Yogas: What to Avoid Before Any New Beginning
Before picking a shubh muhurta, learn what to avoid. The classical texts are as precise about inauspicious periods as auspicious ones — and most "failed muhurta" stories trace back to one of these being ignored.
1. Bhadra (Vishti karana)
What: The 7th karana in the repeating cycle of Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti. Each karana is half a tithi (~12 hours), so Bhadra windows appear regularly through the month.
Why avoided: Mythology makes Bhadra the fierce daughter of Surya — her presence "guards" (blocks) auspicious rites. Practically, it's a received rule: no weddings, housewarmings, or launches in a Bhadra window.
The twist: Bhadra is prescribed for demolition, legal aggression, and protective rites. Inauspicious ≠ useless — it's directional.
2027 note: In our computed 2027 muhurta tables, dates marked "Bhadra part of day" carry a Vishti window — the muhurta lies outside it. See marriage dates and griha pravesh dates.
2. Rahu Kaal, Yamagandam, Gulika Kaal
The three weekday-based "avoid" segments (each one-eighth of daytime):
| Weekday | Rahu Kaal | Yamagandam | Gulika Kaal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | 2nd | 4th | 6th |
| Tue | 7th | 3rd | 5th |
| Wed | 5th | 2nd | 4th |
| Thu | 6th | 1st | 3rd |
| Fri | 4th | 7th | 2nd |
| Sat | 3rd | 6th | 1st |
| Sun | 8th | 5th | 7th |

3. Gandanta — the drowned Moon
The last 3°20′ of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces — the junctions where water signs meet fire signs. The Moon here is gandanta ("knotted at the end"), considered drowning and incapable of supporting beginnings. Our 2027 screens exclude gandanta days automatically.
4. Vyatipata & Vaidhriti yogas
Of the 27 yogas (Sun+Moon combined arcs), two are classically malefic for beginnings:
- Vyatipata (17th yoga) — associated with calamity
- Vaidhriti (27th yoga) — associated with obstruction
The remaining 25 are workable. Our screens exclude both.
5. Rikta tithis & Amavasya
Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi (4th, 9th, 14th of each fortnight) are rikta ("empty") — avoided for all samskaras and launches. Amavasya (new moon) is avoided for beginnings (though it's fine for ancestral rites and certain tantric practices).
6. Planetary combustion (asta)
When Jupiter or Venus sits within ~11° of the Sun, it's asta — combust, invisible, weakened. No weddings or major launches during Guru/Shukra asta. (In 2027, Venus is combust early July–late September and Jupiter mid-August–mid-September — both inside Chaturmas anyway.)
7. Eclipse days & sutak
No muhurta on eclipse days or during sutak (12h before solar, 9h before lunar eclipse). See our 2027 eclipse guide.
How Bhadra is calculated (so you can check any day)
Each tithi = 12° of Moon–Sun elongation; each karana = 6°. Number the 60 karanas of the lunar month 0–59. Karana 0 is Kimstughna; 58–60 are the fixed Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga; the rest cycle Bava → Balava → Kaulava → Taitila → Gara → Vanija → Vishti (Bhadra), repeating.
Shortcut: compute k = floor(elongation / 6). If 1 ≤ k ≤ 57 and k mod 7 == 0, it's Vishti/Bhadra. That's the entire rule — no mystique, just arithmetic. Every panchanga app implements exactly this.
2027 pattern to know: Bhadra windows cluster predictably — e.g., in our 2027 muhurta screens, roughly a third of candidate dates carry a Bhadra window somewhere in the day. The muhurta is simply set outside it. When a pandit says "Bhadra hai," ask when it ends — same-day adjustment usually solves it.
Special case — Bhadra on festivals: Bhadra's most famous appearance is on Raksha Bandhan, when siblings wait for Bhadra to end before tying rakhi. In 2027, Rakhi falls on August 16 — check the day's Bhadra window in a published panchanga before fixing the tying time.
The pre-muhurta checklist
Before finalizing any date, confirm: no Bhadra window at your hour · outside Rahu Kaal/Yamagandam · Moon not in gandanta · yoga not Vyatipata/Vaidhriti · tithi not rikta/Amavasya · no eclipse or sutak · planets not combust. Our muhurta finder runs all seven checks for your city and hour.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bhadra bad for everything?
No — it's bad for auspicious beginnings. It's considered effective for aggressive, protective, or destructive acts. Context decides.
What if my wedding muhurta falls in Bhadra?
Shift the ceremony hour outside the Bhadra window, or pick another date. The window is usually ~6–12 hours, so same-day adjustment often works.
Do these rules apply to daily life or only ceremonies?
The full checklist is for samskaras and major launches. For daily decisions, Rahu Kaal + choghadiya awareness is the practical level most people use.
